Healthy Snacks
Choosing healthy snacks is important to your health and weight control. Eating healthy foods at snack time will: - enable you to keep your energy level more constant
- help you to stay mentally alert
- assist in controlling your weight
- help you avoid the "crash" your system tends to have after taking on a big sugar load that comes with a
soda
and a candy bar.
Focus on eating healthy foods, foods that are real. Real food doesn't come in a box, can or package. If you decide to eat packaged snacks anyway (even though I just told you not to!), beware that the claims written on the package do not have to be true - due to the politics and money behind the laws governing advertising on food labels. If you go into a grocery store and shop along the outside aisles you will see meat, fruit, veggies, and dairy products. These are all real food. I also tell my
coaching clients
to eat smaller meals more times (5-6) per day. When a body is starved it will store fat. When it believes that times are good (when it's being feed good nutrition often) it will release fat.
Being Prepared
Ok, you're busy running around (or working) and all of a sudden you realize you're hungry and your stomach is growling. Trying to find a healthy snack to prepare at this point seldom works! The key is to remember the 6 P's - Prior planning prevents p--- poor performance. It is worth the effort required to stay on your healthy eating plan.
At Home
Eating healthy snacks at home isn't difficult if you shop with doing so in mind. Here is a list of things you may want to keep on hand:- raw almonds or walnuts
- organic peanut butter to put on celery stalks
- healthy
smoothies
- things to make drinks from in your
juicer
- any fruit
- any vegetable
- leftovers
- your homemade trail mix or gorp. You might want to experiment with different combinations of raw coconut, raisins, almonds, and hazel nuts.
Getting Caught with the Munchies Away from Home
This is the toughest time to stick to your healthy eating plan. It is really frustrating to be driving down the road, have the munchies hit, and realize that there is no way you are going to find something healthy along the way. Some tips you might find useful are stashing food in your coat pockets and in the jockey box (glove compartment) of your vehicle. Things that you can do this with are: - raisins
- craisins - (dried cranberries)
- trail mix
- nuts
You need to be aware that nuts, although a healthy and satisfying snack, are high in fat and you should use common sense on how many you eat. Not to worry with something like raisins. Have you ever eaten more than was comfortable? It just doesn't happen.
What are you going to do?
It takes more work, planning, and effort to eat healthy snacks, but isn't your health worth it?
