Burn Fat!

You can burn fat off your body the smart way as opposed to working yourself silly and/or starving.

Your body has 2 sources of energy - sugar or fat. You are in control of what goes into your mouth and therefore you'll determine which one your body uses.

A body that has a metabolism that burns fat will be much slimmer and healthier than one that utilizes sugar.

If you cut out the constant supply of carbs with a high glycemic index (mostly processed carbs, which you should avoid no matter what your diet) then your body will be burning the fatty acids you eat along with your own body fat.

You will turn your system into a fat burning machine instead of one that depends on carbs. This is almost a free weight loss system from the standpoint that you don't have to work hard at it!

As a health coach I always look for things that are easy and enjoyable, as long term change is much easier when it's based on these concepts.

Low Carb

You see this term everywhere now. Do you know what the Minimum Daily Requirement is for carbohydrates? You won't find it listed anywhere because there isn't one.

So, should you cut out carbs totally? No. Eating unprocessed carbs such as fruit and vegetables is healthy and contributes to a balanced diet.

In this context I'd like for you to think of a food as low carb in relation to it's having a low Glycemic Index number.

How many carbs should you consume daily? That depends on you. We all have a different metabolic type so there is no magic, one size fits all - type number.

If weight loss is your goal, try eating between 50 and 70 carbs per day and see how you feel and the results you get. Then make changes accordingly.

Always listen to your body, whether it's diet or exercise, as it is the best judge of what works. A theory is great, but if you try something and it doesn't work or feel good, then it's not working for you. Make an adjustment or move on.

Good Carbs versus Bad Carbs

Not all carbs are created equal. Any food that is natural is going to be more healthy for you than something that has been processed by
man .... things in a box, can or package.

So if you are going to "count carbs" just remember that anything sugary or processed isn't going to serve you when it comes to weight control or health.

Ok, out with Bad Carbs.
Now What?

To shift your metabolism into a higher gear and burn fat, you need to replace the bad carbs (bad, bad carbs) with healthy protein and fat. Protein has much more power in creating the thermic effect than carbs or fats.

Why fats? They not only help your system learn to burn fat, but they also give you a full and satisfied feeling.

You should eat 5-6 times a day. This is another part of the equation in keeping your metabolism going. It's also easier to eat smaller portions when you know that you're going to be eating again in a short time.

Eating more small meals throughout the day is a good idea no matter what food plan you are on.

A body that is starved will store fat. If it gets fewer calories it will adjust so that it can maintain itself. That is why so many people go on a diet that is restrictive and don't lose weight.

When a body believes that times are good (when it's being fed good nutrition often) it will release fat.

Make sure that you are not eating processed meats in your effort to burn fat, as they are very detrimental to your health.
