and increase your all-important functional strength. They work much more of the body than a regular push up or a single weight lifting routine. You will also avoid injuries that are common with lifting weights.
My Rehab Experience
I first tried this new type push up because I wanted a quick indoor exercise to build strength. I couldn't do a regular push up due to a shoulder surgery. If I tried to do one it felt like someone was shoving an ice pick into the shoulder joint. When I started doing these new push ups, I could only do about 5, but they were pain free. I worked up to 25 after a few months and was feeling great.
One day I decided to try regular push ups and found that I was able to do them pain free. The range of motion in my shoulder had also increased.
I had been through physical therapy after the surgery and thought that I was stuck with what I had. Too bad (for me) the Dr's and the therapists didn't know about Hindu push ups!
How to do this exercise.
Explaining in words how to do this exercise is a little like telling someone how to tie their shoes. It really is kind of messy! So I have added a link here for you to view
Hindu push ups.
This exercise is part of a great workout called "The Royal Court" by physical fitness expert Matt Furey, who has won both national and world titles. His website and free newsletter are devoted to increasing your strength and flexibility.
You can check out his
"Combat Conditioning Manual",
which I own and recommend . If you like "politically correct thinking" he may not be for you. He says exactly what he thinks!
How often can I do them?
Coaching
my clients, I find they are often surprised when I tell them they can do these everyday and/or multiple times per day if they choose. You shouldn't max out every time you do them. Some days you will want to push it and others you won't.When trying to build up to more, go ahead and do them multiple times per day. Just do a percentage of your maximum reps and by the end of the day you will have done quite a few more than your personal best.
This will build strength and allow you to increase your repetitions quickly.
