Want a 6-Pack?

How do you get a 6-pack? Well, you already have one. The reason that you (and no one else) can see it, is due to the layer of fat that covers it. That's right, the 6 pack is there, but it's underneath a layer of fat and doesn't show.

The term 6 pack is referring to the 6 abdominal muscles that extend from the bottom of the rib cage to roughly the top of your hips.

In order for these muscles to be seen you must shed your body fat. The reason abs are so hard to see, even on people in good physical condition, is that the body fat around your middle is often the last to leave. Bummer!

So, to have the visible 6-pack you have to get your body fat down to a very low level. Most people aren't anywhere close.

Pills.

Marketing being what it is today, there are always new pills being sold to help you to lose your belly fat. There is usually some new chemical or discovery that has come up and if you will just send in you $59.95 for a 3 month supply, yada, yada, yada...

These come and go constantly. They are sort of like politician's promises. I believe people instinctively know they are too good to be true, but we go for them time and again. Kind of hoping against hope that there is a free lunch.

There is definitely no free lunch when it comes to having ripped abs. You will have a very low body fat percentage if you are able to achieve this goal. However, you will work hard to get there.

Gizmo's.

As with pills, the latest and greatest Gizmo (that's a technical term by the way :) advertized on TV isn't going to make your abs show through.

We already talked about the need to reduce overall body fat in our quest. It is a myth that you can spot reduce fat. The claims that these machines are going to remove the fat from your tummy area are bogus.

Endless abdominal exercises.

Doing huge numbers of crunches, planks, and other exercises that target the abs will not make your 6-pack show. The good news is that they will help build your core strength, which is very important.

Abdominal muscles will tone and strengthen your ab muscles, but can actually make your mid section larger. This is due to your building the muscles larger and not reducing your body fat.

Nutrition

Your diet is the most important element in getting rid of body fat. You can do everything else right and you won't meet your goal if you are eating the wrong foods.

You need to stay away from:

Eating real food as to to it's natural state will serve you best.

Aerobic Exercise

Find some cardio exercises that you like and set up a schedule to do them. Don't do endless hours of the same exercise though.

One thing you might want to try is working out intensely first and then performing the cardio exercise afterward. Eg, you could do sprints first and then:

You can also use interval training, which is varying the exercise you're performing from easiest to most difficult.

Weight Training

Lifting weights can help you burn more total calories per day than with any other activity.

Most people consider cardio to be the calorie burner and it does do a good job of that during the exercise period. However, your body becomes increasingly more efficient and after awhile you have to do more and more to get the same benefit.

While aerobic exercise burns more calories per hour, heavy anaerobic exercise ramps your metabolism up and you burn extra calories for the rest of the day.
